STRIVE-SCI - Strengthening the critical first year after Spinal Cord Injury

Building the first national knowledge base for rehabilitation pathways after spinal cord injury.

What is STRIVE-SCI?

STRIVE-SCI is Sweden’s first national research programme examining how rehabilitation pathways function across care levels, integrating recovery trajectories, patient experiences and system-level analysis to strengthen continuity, equity and patient outcomes.

Rehabilitation after spinal cord injury involves complex pathways across specialised, regional and municipal care.

The Programme

STRIVE-SCI generates national evidence on how these pathways function during the first year after injury, with the aim of strengthening the understanding of variation, care transitions, patient needs and rehabilitation continuity across Sweden.

STRIVE-SCI follows 300 individuals during the first year after injury, combining national patient data, patient experiences and system-level analyses of the rehabilitation process.

The aim is to generate knowledge on how rehabilitation pathways function across specialised, regional and municipal care, and to identify factors influencing continuity, equity and recovery.

STRIVE-SCI is based on national collaboration between rehabilitation clinics and regions, providing comprehensive coverage of specialised spinal cord injury rehabilitation in Sweden.

Why is this important?

Rehabilitation after spinal cord injury is complex and often involves several providers, care transitions and levels of responsibility across specialised, regional and municipal care.

At present, Sweden lacks national evidence on how these rehabilitation pathways function across the first year after injury. This is increasingly important as the spinal cord injury population becomes more heterogeneous, with more older individuals and more complex health care needs.

STRIVE-SCI addresses this gap by generating Swedish-specific evidence on rehabilitation pathways after spinal cord injury. By studying variation, care transitions and remaining rehabilitation needs during the first year after injury, the programme builds a national knowledge base to support future development, co-design and implementation-oriented activities aimed at strengthening continuity, equity and patient outcomes.
